Unit 1: Computer Networks and Emerging Technologies
What is a network, and why do we need one? LAN and WAN, the switch that directs data, wired and wireless networks — plus robots, distributed applications, blockchain, 3D holograms, and the difference between generative AI and agentic AI. English narration with Urdu subtitles.
What you will learn
- LAN vs WAN: LAN covers a small area like a school or home, is fast and low cost; WAN covers cities and countries, is slower and more expensive — the Internet is the biggest WAN.
- Benefits of networks: sharing printers and internet, sharing files without USB drives, fast communication by email and video calls, and safe central storage.
- Network switch: a smart traffic controller inside a LAN — it sends data only to the correct device, using MAC addresses, so the network stays fast.
- Wired vs wireless: wired (cables) is faster, more stable and more secure; wireless (WiFi radio waves) lets devices move freely and is quick to set up.
- Robots: assemble products, help in surgery, clean homes, explore space, detect bombs, farm, and assist elderly people — best for repetitive, difficult or unsafe tasks.
- Distributed applications: run on many computers together — faster, reliable even if one computer fails, and able to serve many users, like online banking and social media.
- Blockchain: linked blocks that cannot easily be changed — secure, transparent records without a central authority, used in digital currency, supply chains, voting and medical records.
- 3D holographic imaging: three-dimensional images that appear to float in space, made with laser light — used in education, museums, entertainment and medical planning.
- Generative AI vs agentic AI: generative AI creates new text, images or music from a prompt; agentic AI plans, uses tools and completes goals on its own.

Answers — click to check
Q1: LAN: small area, high speed, low cost. WAN: large area, slower, more expensive.
Q2: A switch connects devices in a LAN and sends data only to the correct destination device using MAC addresses.
Q3: Any three: factory assembly, surgery help, home cleaning, space exploration, bomb detection, farming, elderly assistance.
Q4: To keep records secure and transparent in linked blocks that cannot easily be changed, without a central authority.
Q5: Generative AI creates new content from a prompt; agentic AI plans and takes actions on its own to complete goals.
