Natural & Artificial Satellites
What is a satellite, and where do satellites live? The Moon — made by nature — and the thousands of artificial satellites made by humans, living in three orbits: LEO, MEO and GEO. Explained with animation, Urdu narration and Urdu subtitles.
What you will learn
- A satellite is an object that moves around a planet in a path called an orbit.
- A natural satellite is made by nature, not by humans. Our Moon is the Earth's natural satellite: it takes about 27 days to go once around the Earth, and it is about 384,000 kilometres away. Other planets have moons too: Mars has 2, Jupiter has more than 90, and Saturn has more than 140!
- An artificial satellite is made by humans and sent into space by a rocket. The first one, Sputnik 1, was launched in 1957. Today, thousands of artificial satellites orbit the Earth, and each one has a job to do.
- Artificial satellites live in three main orbits: Low Earth Orbit (LEO), about 400 to 2,000 kilometres up — the Space Station and Earth-observing satellites; Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), about 20,000 kilometres up — GPS navigation satellites; and Geostationary Orbit (GEO), about 36,000 kilometres up — TV and weather satellites that stay fixed over one place.
- Satellites help us every day: they guide our maps, show the weather, carry TV signals, and let us talk across the world.
